Book Review: ‘One Thousand Gifts’

One of my dearest friends gave me a book for a birthday present the year I graduated college. I had no idea the book would be so influential on me and impact me even now, years later. ‘One Thousand Gifts‘ by Ann Voskamp is one of those books you will want to read over and over. Be sure to keep a pen nearby and a journal, because most of what she says you will want to underline or elaborate on.

Ann Voskamp is one of my favorite writers; she has a way of making you feel like you are experiencing everything first hand, that she has personally invited you to have a conversation with her about Jesus. If you don’t have the book, I strongly suggest you go out and buy it as quickly as you can. In the book, Voskamp helps us to see God’s work in our everyday life. How quickly do we lose sight of God’s miracles because it isn’t something big? Voskamp invites us to look for small moments where God is at work. A dirty kitchen? That is a sign of plenty to eat and good company to share it with. Dirty, muddy boots? Thank you Lord for rain and the ability to get up and work.

In the back of the book we are encouraged to write our own 1,000 gifts. 1,000 moments, tangible gifts, or experiences we are thankful for. When you first begin it is easy; thank you Lord for my husband, family, a home, food on the table, clothes on my back, a job, a running vehicle, friends that call and love us, etc. But then you have to really start digging. By number 140 you might be thankful for a fresh baked pie, by 263, clean sheets. You may write down you are thankful for a full tank of gas or a card from a friend. I found that when I started writing these down, I could find ways that God was loving me throughout the day. I realized how truly blessed I am. How many times do we disregard the small things in our day when really they could be these monumental moments in our life that make us stop and realize we are LOVED and SEEN by our Creator? Thank you Lord for my crying baby in the middle of the night, because some parents would give anything to hear their little one just one more time! Thank you for a baby that constantly wants to nurse, because of it she is healthy! Lord, help me to find the beauty of the everyday blessings. Your hands are forever at work in my life, and how sad that we miss Your graces daily.

Here is an excerpt from the book:

“Behold! For those who have learned to see-He gives, He gifts. He gifts with seeds as small as moments, grace upon grace, and the unlikely here and now, it shall sustain you, feed you. Do not disdain the small. The promise of feast is within the moments. Our enough is always in the now, because He never leaves us….And if prayers are what we seed and Cross-love is what we knead, what we reap and what we eat is the harvest of God. He is enough…All the hardly-things can be holy-things.”  (Ann Voskamp; ‘One Thousand Gifts.’ pg.102-103)

If you have read ‘One Thousand Gifts’ please let me know, and tell me what you thought about it! I pray that it can bless you the same way it did me.
